Where it came from
Sky Theater Strix was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set War of the Spark. The set focused on the climactic battle between the Gatewatch and the planeswalker Nicol Bolas on the plane of Ravnica. As a common creature card, the Strix was designed to populate the Limited environment of the set, representing the airborne chaos occurring above the city-plane during the global conflict.
The card features artwork by veteran illustrator Igor Kieryluk, who depicted the creature as a mechanical bird-construct serving the Azorius Senate. The design reflects the visual language of Ravnica's law-enforcing faction, utilizing a stark blue-and-white color palette and intricate, clockwork-inspired ornamentation. Upon release, it was recognized as a functional, efficient utility creature that helped define the set's graveyard-synergy themes.
