Where it came from
Skyboon Evangelist was released as part of the promotional card cycle for the Magic: The Gathering set Streets of New Capenna, which debuted in 2022. The set explores an art deco-inspired metropolis governed by five demon-led crime families, drawing heavily from 1920s noir aesthetics and urban fantasy themes. This card was specifically included in the Commander product line, designed to support the mechanical archetypes associated with the Brokers family, who emphasize legalistic power and protective shielding.
The illustration for this card was created by artist Fajareka Setiawan, who utilized a bold, stylized approach to reflect the 'Gilded Age' luxury of New Capenna. The visual design focuses on the evangelist as an authoritative, imposing figure, contrasting stark light and shadows to evoke the corruption and opulence central to the set's narrative identity. It was well-received by players for its thematic integration of white-aligned combat mechanics and its contribution to the overall visual storytelling of the plane.
