Where it came from
Skyhunter Skirmisher was originally released in the 2004 Mirrodin expansion, a set centered on a metallic, artifact-driven world. The card depicts a member of the Leonin race, cat-like humanoids who resisted the biomechanical corruption of their home plane. By the time it was reprinted in the 2015 Modern Masters set, it had become a familiar presence in limited play environments, valued for its dual-keyword efficiency of flying and double strike.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic figures in the early history of Magic: The Gathering. His design aimed to capture the sleek, agile nature of the Leonin warrior, emphasizing a sense of motion and martial readiness. While not a centerpiece of competitive tournament formats, the 2015 re-release was well-received by players for its refined frame and inclusion in a set designed specifically to curate and celebrate the game's expansive history.
