Where it came from
Slaughter the Strong was released in early 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Within the narrative of the Ixalan block, the card depicts a tactical maneuver employed by the Sun Empire, reflecting their militaristic culture and religious devotion to the sun deity. Mechanically, the card serves as a board wipe intended to punish decks that rely on large, singular creatures, forcing players to sacrifice their board state to meet a power threshold.
The artwork was illustrated by Volkan Baga, who utilized a dramatic, sweeping composition to emphasize the card's theme of divine retribution. By portraying a massive, glowing celestial effect descending upon a battlefield, Baga aimed to capture the awe and finality of the spell. The design was well-received by the player base for its strategic versatility, becoming a staple in Commander and various white-based control decks due to its efficiency in asymmetrical board management.
