Where it came from
Silvergill Adept was introduced in the Rivals of Ixalan expansion, released in January 2018 as the conclusion to the two-part Ixalan block. The set focused on a conflict between four factions vying for control of the plane of Ixalan, with the Merfolk of the River Heralds represented by this creature. Designed as an efficient blue creature, it serves as a functional reprint of a card originally printed in the Lorwyn set, bringing a powerful tribal synergy tool back into the competitive environment of the time.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Nils Hamm, whose work is known for an atmospheric, painterly quality that often emphasizes the mystical nature of his subjects. In designing the Silvergill Adept, Hamm leaned into the aquatic aesthetic of the Ixalan Merfolk, highlighting the flowing movement of the character and its integration with the lush, overgrown environments of the set. The card was well-received by players for its balance of card advantage and board presence, quickly becoming a staple in Merfolk-themed decks across various formats.
