Where it came from
The Sliver token was introduced as part of the Magic 2014 core set release in 2013 to support the return of the popular Sliver creature type. In the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering, Slivers are a hive-minded species that share their abilities with one another, necessitating tokens to represent the generic swarm members created by various spells and abilities within the set.
The design of the token reflects the updated aesthetic for Slivers in the 2014 set, which moved away from their classic humanoid-insectoid look toward a more fluid, predatory, and alien silhouette. Illustrators at Wizards of the Coast sought to capture the swarm-like nature of the creatures, emphasizing their jagged features and unified biological identity to differentiate them from the iconic designs of the past.
