Where it came from
Smelt-Ward Gatekeepers was released in 2013 as part of the Dragon's Maze expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a common-rarity creature intended to support the Gate-focused mechanics of the Ravnica block, specifically rewarding players for controlling multiple Maze's End gates. It emerged from a period of Wizards of the Coast's design philosophy that sought to bridge the distinct guild identities of the Ravnica setting through universal land types.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who captured the utilitarian and industrial aesthetic of the Izzet League and Boros Legion territories within the city-plane of Ravnica. The artwork emphasizes the armored, imposing nature of the gatekeepers, reflecting their role as border sentries. Upon release, the card was generally viewed by the community as a functional, limited-play tool designed to stabilize board states in sealed or draft environments rather than a centerpiece for competitive constructed formats.
