Where it came from
Smelt // Herd // Saw was created as a playtest card for the 2019 Mystery Booster set, a unique release designed to celebrate the history and chaos of Magic: The Gathering. These cards were distributed exclusively in select convention environments, intended to evoke the feel of early prototype playtesting where designers experimented with unconventional mechanics, humor, and design space that might not fit into a standard expansion.
The card features an 'all-in-one' design, functioning as a split card with three distinct components, reflecting the experimental spirit of the R&D team at Wizards of the Coast. By utilizing the 'playtest' aesthetic—complete with a simple layout and prominent playtest stamps—the design leans into a DIY, work-in-progress charm that provides players with a nostalgic look at the iterative nature of game development.
