Provenance

Where it came from

Smoldering Crater was released as part of the Anthologies set in 1998, a retrospective product designed to showcase iconic cards and themes from the early years of Magic: The Gathering. As a land card that deals damage to its controller upon entering the battlefield, it represents the design philosophy of the Mirage block, where land-based utility often carried a minor drawback to balance its efficiency.

The card features artwork by Margaret Organ-Kean, whose atmospheric and textured style was prominent during the mid-to-late 1990s. The design intentionally evokes a volatile, volcanic landscape, reinforcing the card's function as a source of red and black mana. While the card is a functional reprint of the original version from the Mirage expansion, its inclusion in Anthologies served to reintroduce players to the 'cycle' lands that had become staples in various competitive and casual deck-building formats.
