Smoldering Crater

Smoldering Crater first appeared in the Legions set of Magic: The Gathering in 2003, designed as part of a cycle of cycling lands that provided utility during the late game. This land card allows players to tap it for red mana or discard it to draw a new card, offering flexibility that balances mana efficiency with deck consistency. The card was specifically engineered to help players mitigate the risk of drawing too many lands in the later stages of a match.

The artwork for this version was provided by Mark Tedin, a veteran illustrator whose distinctive, textured style helped define the visual language of the game's early years. Tedin’s depiction of the crater captures the volcanic, desolate nature of the setting, emphasizing the intense heat and harsh environment associated with red-aligned mana. It was later included in 'The List,' a curated selection of reprints integrated into modern booster packs to provide players with access to older, functional staples.
