Smoldering Crater

Smoldering Crater first appeared in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998 as part of a cycle of cycling lands that provided utility in the late game. Designed to balance resource management, the card allows players to pay a mana cost and discard it to draw a new card, offering flexibility when the land is no longer needed. This specific version was reprinted in the 2018 Commander Anthology Volume II, a curated collection designed to provide players with accessible, pre-constructed decks and staple cards for the popular Commander format.

The artwork was provided by Mark Tedin, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. His illustration captures the desolate, volcanic nature of the crater, utilizing a dramatic color palette to emphasize the heat and barren landscape. Within the context of the Commander Anthology release, the inclusion of Tedin’s art served as a nostalgic nod to the game's history, maintaining the original visual identity of the card while integrating it into the modern, multiplayer-focused play experience.
