Where it came from
Sneak Attack was originally introduced in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, a set renowned for its high-powered artifacts and enchantments that defined a volatile era of competitive play. The card quickly became a centerpiece for 'combo' strategies, allowing players to cheat massive, high-cost creatures into play for a single red mana. Its design aesthetic reflects the aggressive, high-risk, high-reward philosophy of late-nineties Magic: The Gathering, where the efficiency of spells often outweighed their traditional mana costs.
This specific iteration appears in the 2023 Dominaria Remastered set, a curated compilation designed to celebrate the history of the Magic multiverse. The art for this version retains the visceral intensity of the original concept, focusing on the abruptness of the surprise assault. The card has long been received by the community as a quintessential staple for 'Red' decks, balancing its devastating utility with the drawback of sacrificing the creature at the end of the turn, a mechanic that remains a hallmark of strategic red-aligned play.
