Where it came from
Whitemane Lion was originally released in the 2007 set Planar Chaos, intended to explore alternative color pie philosophies within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The card features the ability to return a creature to its owner's hand, a mechanic that provides utility both for saving a creature from removal and for triggering 'enter the battlefield' effects repeatedly. Its inclusion in the 2023 Dominaria Remastered set served as a deliberate nod to Magic's deep history, reprinting cards that define the nostalgia and mechanical depth of the Dominaria plane.
The artwork for the Dominaria Remastered printing preserves the aesthetic of the noble, leonine protector of the Benalish forces. Designed to evoke the themes of tactical defense and loyalty central to white-aligned factions, the card was received well by players in the Limited formats of Dominaria Remastered. Its design remains a staple of the white color identity, appreciated for its versatility and its role as a low-cost, repeatable engine for board state management.
