Snow-Covered Mountain

Snow-Covered Mountain, numbered 283, was released in early 2021 as part of the Kaldheim expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set drew heavy thematic inspiration from Norse mythology and the harsh, icy landscapes of Viking-age Scandinavia. Wizards of the Coast designed these basic snow-covered lands to mechanically support the set's snow-matters cards, which relied on the 'snow' supertype for various synergistic effects during gameplay.

The artwork for this specific iteration was crafted by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a distinct, painterly aesthetic to evoke the atmospheric chill of a high-altitude peak. By focusing on expansive, cold color palettes and sharp, jagged topography, Voss aimed to ground the player in the unforgiving environment of the Kaldheim plane. The card was well-received by the player base for its evocative art style, which deviated from traditional, more realistic landscape depictions in favor of a moody, illustrative approach.
