Where it came from
The Snow-Covered Plains, numbered 1 in the Secret Lair: Showcase: Strixhaven drop, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. This series was designed to feature specialized, stylized art treatments that differentiate the cards from their standard-set counterparts, leaning into a high-fantasy aesthetic that aligns with the magical school setting of the Strixhaven expansion.
The illustration was created by artist Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her ethereal and detailed portraiture and landscape work. Her design for this card utilizes a minimalist, stark approach to the icy environment, aiming to capture a sense of quiet isolation that contrasts with the more complex, busy art styles often seen in mainline card sets. Upon release, the card was well-received by collectors who prioritize artistic cohesion and the distinct visual identity provided by the limited Secret Lair release window.
