Where it came from
The Sol Talisman was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion Modern Horizons 2. As a card designed specifically for the Modern format, it serves as a color-shifted, suspended version of the iconic Sol Ring. Its creation was part of a broader effort by Wizards of the Coast to bring powerful effects into Modern that were previously restricted by the game's balance standards, utilizing the suspend mechanic to gate its ramp potential behind a three-turn delay.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who rendered the talisman in a style consistent with the high-fantasy aesthetic of the set. The design emphasizes the object's celestial, sun-inspired nature, intended to evoke the feeling of ancient, dormant power. Upon its release, the card was received as a nuanced addition to the format, praised by players for its clever design but recognized as a niche inclusion compared to more immediate mana-acceleration options.
