Where it came from
Chatterfang, Squirrel General was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to satisfy a long-standing community demand for a legendary creature that could effectively lead a 'Squirrel' themed tribal deck, a niche archetype that had been largely neglected in black-border tournament play for over two decades.
The art was illustrated by Rudy Siswanto, who captured the character's whimsical yet formidable nature as a woodland commander. Within the game's mechanics, the card is noted for its ability to generate creature tokens and provide a sacrifice engine, which quickly established it as a staple in the Commander format and a fan favorite among players who appreciate intricate, thematic deck-building.
