Where it came from
Somberwald Stag was released in July 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon set, the second expansion in the Shadows over Innistrad block for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to shift the gothic horror aesthetic of the game toward cosmic horror, incorporating themes of mutation and corruption as the plane of Innistrad fell under the influence of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul.
