Where it came from
Fortune's Favor was released in 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the gothic horror-inspired plane of Innistrad, the card reflects the desperate themes of the set, where the world is succumbing to the influence of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. The card design centers on the mechanic of 'Will of the Planeswalker,' a specialized variation of the game's 'Fact or Fiction' effect, emphasizing the psychological burden of making choices amidst encroaching madness.
The artwork was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, a long-time contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and moody style. Briclot utilized a vibrant, unsettling color palette to depict a character attempting to glean arcane knowledge from an otherworldly presence. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful, if mechanically situational, inclusion that reinforced the set's broader narrative of survival and cosmic mystery, fitting seamlessly into the blue-aligned control strategies of that era.
