Where it came from
Soot Imp was released in 2008 as part of the Eventide expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Shadowmoor block, Eventide focused on the themes of hybrid mana and the transition of the plane into a state of permanent twilight. The card was designed as an uncommon creature intended to emphasize the black-aligned 'persist' mechanic, which allowed creatures to return to the battlefield after dying, albeit in a weakened state.
