Where it came from
Soothsaying was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced a theme of mercantilism and political intrigue, set on the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its towering mountain cities and complex trade guilds. Mechanically, the card reflects the set's focus on card selection and top-of-library manipulation, providing a repeatable way to filter one's deck at the cost of mana.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Arnie Swekel, who contributed numerous pieces to the game during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Swekel’s design leans into the thematic aesthetic of the set, depicting a mystical figure engaged in divination. The artwork was well-received by players for its atmospheric quality, capturing the enigmatic, high-fantasy tone that defined the visual identity of the Mercadian Masques era.
