Soul of Magma

Soul of Magma was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set drew heavily from Japanese folklore and mythology, introducing a distinct aesthetic shift for the game that moved away from traditional high-fantasy tropes toward the spirits, known as Kami, and the mortals of the Kamigawa plane. This particular card represents one of the elemental spirits defined by the set’s focus on the interaction between the physical and spiritual realms.

The card was illustrated by Japanese artist Hitoshi Suzuki, whose work contributed to the set's immersive, East Asian-inspired visual language. Like many common-rarity cards from the era, it was designed primarily to reinforce the set’s mechanical themes, such as the 'spiritcraft' ability.
