Soul Shatter // Soul Shatter

Soul Shatter was introduced in the Zendikar Rising set released in 2020, serving as a tactical removal spell designed to punish opponents for playing their most powerful individual creatures. The card mechanic requires an opponent to sacrifice their highest mana-value creature, reflecting the high-stakes, adventure-focused theme of the Zendikar plane. Its design aims to balance reactive gameplay with the aggressive board states often found in the Magic: The Gathering competitive meta.

The art featured in the Zendikar Rising Art Series edition was illustrated by Johannes Voss. Voss focused on a visceral, high-impact aesthetic that visually represents the act of a soul being forcibly extracted, aligning with the dark, elemental magic thematic present in the set. The card was well-received by players for its efficiency in various formats and remains a notable example of modern removal design within the game's broader tactical landscape.
