Soul Shred

Soul Shred was released in 1997 as part of the Portal set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed specifically as an introductory product to welcome new players to the hobby, featuring simplified rules and a more accessible card layout compared to the standard base sets of the era. The set drew inspiration from the lore and aesthetic of the game's flagship world, Dominaria, but functioned as a standalone mechanical experience for beginners.

The card's illustration was created by artist Brian Snoddy, who was a prolific contributor to the game during its early years. In keeping with the Portal set's goal of immediate visual clarity, Snoddy’s work utilized a bold, illustrative style that emphasized the darker, more visceral nature of the black-aligned cards in the game. Upon release, the card was well-received by the player base for its functional simplicity, serving as a staple for those learning the fundamental mechanics of sorcery-speed removal.
