Soul Warden

Soul Warden was originally introduced in the Exodus expansion of 1998, but the version from Magic 2010 represents a later reprint that brought the classic card into the core set environment. Designed as a low-cost creature with a simple utility ability, it reflects the early design philosophy of Magic: The Gathering, where white cards were characterized by incremental life gain and defensive board presence. By 2010, the card had become a staple for casual and competitive players alike, valued for its ability to trigger reliably whenever any creature enters the battlefield.

The artwork for the Magic 2010 edition was created by Greg Staples, who moved away from the more ethereal depictions of early iterations to provide a grounded, stoic representation of a healer. Staples focused on the character's armor and steady stance to convey the sense of protection and endurance synonymous with the card's mechanical function. Upon its release in the 2010 core set, the card was well received for its accessibility to newer players and its enduring effectiveness in decks focused on synergy and creature-heavy strategies.
