Soul Warden

Soul Warden first appeared in the Exodus expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1998, designed as a low-cost utility creature that rewarded players for creature-heavy board states. By the time it was included in the Ninth Edition core set in 2005, it had already established itself as a staple of white-aligned decks due to its efficient mana cost and consistent life-gain trigger. The reprint in Ninth Edition marked a period where the card was widely accessible to newer players during a time of transition for the game's visual design standards.

The Ninth Edition illustration was provided by Randy Gallegos, an artist known for his painterly style during the mid-era of the game's history. Gallegos sought to capture the ethereal, protective nature of the cleric, utilizing soft lighting to emphasize the character's role as a source of healing rather than a combatant. Within the competitive community, the card is remembered for its impact on early tournament formats, often serving as a linchpin in 'Soul Sisters' deck archetypes which focused on accumulating high life totals to outlast opponents.
