Soul Warden

Soul Warden was first released in 1998 as part of the Exodus set, the final expansion in the Rath Cycle of the Magic: The Gathering card game. Designed by Richard Garfield and his team, the set introduced mechanics centered around graveyard interaction and sacrifice themes, with the Soul Warden serving as a foundational white creature that rewards the player for creature-based play. It was created to provide a low-cost, repeatable life-gain effect that remains relevant in both early and late-game scenarios.

The artwork was commissioned from Randy Gallegos, whose illustrative style during the late 1990s helped define the aesthetic of the game's early sets. Gallegos portrayed the warden as a serene, mystical figure, aligning with the card's mechanical function of healing and preservation. The card was well-received by the player base for its efficiency, quickly becoming a staple in white-based control and 'soul sister' deck archetypes, where it has seen consistent play across various formats for over two decades.
