Where it came from
Soulflayer was released as part of the Fate Reforged set in early 2015, specifically appearing as a promotional card. The creature represents a dark, manifestation-based entity from the plane of Tarkir, designed to showcase the set's focus on graveyard interaction and the unique 'delve' mechanic. Its design reflects a fusion of the plane's distinct clan identities, specifically drawing upon the Abzan and Sultai aesthetics to emphasize its predatory, soul-consuming nature.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who sought to capture the ethereal, fragmented appearance of the creature while grounding it in the grim, high-fantasy tone of the block. Upon its release, it became a notable piece for collectors and players alike, praised for its complex mechanics and striking artwork that effectively communicated its role as a high-cost, high-reward threat on the battlefield.
