Where it came from
Crux of Fate was released in early 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a rare black sorcery card, it was designed to serve as a pivotal board wipe during the set's time-travel narrative, which depicts the pivotal moment where the dragon Ugin faces Nicol Bolas. The card's mechanics reflect this draconic influence by allowing players to destroy either all dragons or all non-dragon creatures, effectively forcing a decision between protecting or purging the set's primary draconic entities.
The illustrative work for the promotional version, collector number 65p, was handled by artist Jason Chan. Chan sought to capture the immense scale and elemental power of the clash, utilizing a dynamic composition that emphasizes the destructive forces at play. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical versatility in Commander and other casual formats, quickly becoming a staple in dragon-themed deck archetypes due to its thematic resonance and utility.
