Where it came from
Sovereign Okinec Ahau was released in late 2023 as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan set for Magic: The Gathering. This specific card, bearing collector number 240s, was distributed as a promotional item, often appearing in the form of a 'Prerelease' stamped version or a special borderless treatment designed to highlight the Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetic of the Ixalan plane.
The card’s illustration reflects the set’s thematic focus on deep-jungle exploration and ancient civilizations. It was created to function as a powerful legendary creature within the game's Commander format, designed by Wizards of the Coast’s internal team to reward players for building aggressive, creature-heavy decks. It was generally well-received by the player base for its unique ability to scale the power and toughness of other creatures on the battlefield.
