Where it came from
Sower of Discord was released in the 2023 set Commander Masters, a premium product designed specifically for the Magic: The Gathering Commander format. Originally debuted in the 2018 Battlebond set, the card was reprinted here to provide players with a powerful tool for multiplayer politics. Its design reflects the chaotic nature of Battlebond’s two-headed giant mechanics, tasking players with linking the fates of two opponents to ensure that damage dealt to one is mirrored by the other.
The artwork, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, leans into a visceral, gothic aesthetic that emphasizes the card's function of sowing division. Kieryluk’s design captures the entity as an agent of strife, utilizing sharp, angular forms and a dark color palette to reflect its black-aligned mana identity. Upon its re-emergence in the Commander Masters set, the card was widely received as a staple for aggressive, politics-focused deck builds, valued for its ability to shorten games and create tension at the table.
