Spellbook

Spellbook was first introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the Exodus expansion of 1998, designed by Wizards of the Coast to provide players with a way to bypass the maximum hand size rule. The card features artwork by Mark Poole, who captured a sense of arcane utility that fits the game’s high-fantasy aesthetic. It became a staple utility artifact, valued for its low casting cost and simple, impactful effect on resource management.

For the Seventh Edition core set released in 2001, the card was reprinted to maintain its presence in the standard environment. The design remained consistent with the game's shift toward a more modern, cleaner visual layout introduced during this era. While it did not receive a new illustration for this specific core set release, it remains a recognized example of the game's foundational design philosophy where basic artifacts provide essential tactical support.
