Where it came from
Sphinx of Clear Skies was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to evoke nostalgia for the game's original setting, returning to the plane of Dominaria during a time of renewed conflict with the Phyrexian invasion. This creature reflects the set's focus on high-fantasy archetypes and the return of fan-favorite creature types that have been central to the game's identity since its inception in the early 1990s.
The card's illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work frequently features dynamic lighting and intricate creature anatomy. In this piece, the artist aimed to convey the majestic and intellectual nature of a sphinx while grounding it within the aerial aesthetic of the Dominaria setting. Upon release, the card was received as a solid inclusion for Limited play formats, noted for its ability to provide card selection and flying evasion during intense matches.
