Karplusan Forest

Karplusan Forest first appeared in the Ice Age expansion in 1995, representing a rugged, mountain-laden woodland on the plane of Dominaria. Its inclusion in the 2022 Dominaria United set marked a return to the roots of the game, reprinting a classic 'pain land' that allows players to tap for colorless mana or pay a life to produce red or green mana. The design is intended to reflect the harsh, volcanic environment of the region, emphasizing a balance between resource utility and self-inflicted damage.

The art for this specific printing was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's thematic emphasis on the history of Dominaria to create a visually dense, atmospheric landscape. Voss aimed to capture the forest's distinct blend of frost and volcanic warmth, a hallmark of the Karplusan region’s lore. The card was well-received by players for both its functional role in competitive deck building and its nostalgic ties to early Magic: The Gathering history.
