Where it came from
The Sphinx of Clear Skies was originally introduced in the Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar and was reimagined for the Dominaria United set. This particular version, labeled 67p, was released as a promotional card to celebrate the game's return to the plane of Dominaria, a cornerstone setting in the franchise's lore. It was designed to function as both a thematic callback to classic high-fantasy tropes and a strategic utility card for blue-aligned decks, emphasizing the game's focus on aerial dominance and card advantage.
The art for this iteration was crafted to align with the sweeping, high-magic aesthetic of the Dominaria United release, moving away from the rugged exploration themes of its original debut. It was distributed through organized play events and promotional bundles, aiming to provide players with a visually distinct version of a card that had become a staple in control archetypes. The design team focused on maintaining the sphinx's iconic ability to reveal and filter cards, a mechanic that has been consistently received by players as a powerful tool for maintaining consistency during a match.
