Where it came from
Sphinx of the Second Sun first appeared in the Commander Legends set released in late 2020. Designed as a high-cost mythic rare, the card was intended to provide a powerful late-game engine for Commander players, specifically centered around the unique mechanic of untapping all permanents during an additional beginning phase. The card evokes the celestial, desert-themed motifs of the Amonkhet plane, reflecting its role as a guardian figure within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.
The inclusion of this specific card in The List—a curated selection of reprints inserted into Set Boosters—highlights its enduring appeal to the community. Artists such as Greg Staples have contributed to the card's visual identity, focusing on a sense of majestic scale and cosmic power. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players focusing on control and mana-intensive strategies, who valued its ability to effectively grant the controller two turns' worth of untap steps.
