Where it came from
Sphinx of the Second Sun was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Commander Legends, a set specifically designed for the multiplayer Commander format. The card was crafted to embody the majestic, enigmatic nature of sphinxes while providing a unique mechanical advantage that grants players an additional beginning phase after their main phase. This ability reflects the creature's thematic connection to time and celestial cycles within the game's lore, specifically tied to the plane of Amonkhet.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, who has contributed extensively to the visual language of the game. Velinov designed the sphinx to appear imposing and regal, emphasizing its wings and the glowing, sun-drenched atmosphere of its home plane. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its high-impact potential in long-form games, where its ability to untap lands and trigger upkeep effects allows for significant strategic flexibility.
