Where it came from
Sphinx Summoner was released in 2009 as part of the Conflux expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a card tied to the Esper shard of the Alara plane, it was designed to embody the intersection of blue and black mana, focusing on the game's artifact-heavy mechanics. Its introduction arrived during a period when the game was heavily emphasizing artifact synergies, and it quickly became a staple for players looking to tutor specific machines from their library into play.
The card features artwork by Nils Hamm, a frequent illustrator for the game known for his atmospheric and textured style. Hamm’s depiction of the Sphinx Summoner captures the sleek, metal-integrated aesthetic of the Esper civilization, highlighting the blend of organic form and magical artifice that defined the set's visual identity. It remains recognized by collectors as a distinct example of the era's focus on complex, mana-intensive utility creatures.
