Where it came from
Sphinx Summoner was originally released in the 2009 Alara Reborn expansion, representing the intersection of blue, black, and white mana within the Esper shard. This specific iteration, printed as card number 220 in the 2020 Double Masters set, features updated card frame technology while retaining the mechanical identity established during the Alara block. It was designed as a key enabler for artifact-heavy archetypes, specifically facilitating the tutor effect required to bring high-value metallic creatures into play.
The artwork for this version captures the aesthetic sensibilities of Esper, focusing on the blend of organic sphinx physiology with the cold, refined filigree that defines the plane's construct-based civilization. The design choices prioritize the creature's functional utility in a tournament setting, emphasizing the synergy between the summoner and the broader artifact library. Upon its inclusion in Double Masters, the card was received as a reliable reprint for legacy and commander players seeking to optimize their utility-focused decks.
