Provenance

Where it came from

Spincrusher was released in 2004 as part of the Darksteel expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was the second installment in the Mirrodin block, a block defined by its focus on artifacts and metal-themed mechanics. The card was designed as a colorless creature that enters the battlefield with charge counters, which could be removed to force a combat challenge against opponents, reflecting the aggressive, industrial aesthetic of the plane of Mirrodin.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Greg Staples, known for his dark and detailed fantasy style. Staples aimed to convey the mechanical, predatory nature of the artifact creature, capturing the cold, metallic essence central to the lore of the Darksteel expansion. Upon release, Spincrusher was noted by players for its utility in limited formats, though it remained a niche choice in competitive constructed play due to its specialized trigger requirements.
