Where it came from
The Spirit token from the War of the Spark expansion was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2019 as part of a pivotal set in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse narrative. This token was designed to represent the spectral beings summoned by various cards within the set, specifically those featuring the 'amass' mechanic or loyalty abilities that create flying creatures. Its inclusion served to support the complex board states characteristic of the War of the Spark, a set defined by the climax of the multi-year Bolas Arc storyline.
The illustration was created by artist Daarken, a long-time contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and moody fantasy aesthetic. His design choices for this token emphasize a ghostly, ethereal presence consistent with the darker visual tone of the Ravnica-based conflict. Upon release, it was widely praised by players and collectors for its cohesive integration with the set's broader art direction, providing a distinct and evocative visual identity for a utility card that otherwise often goes overlooked.
