Spirit

The Spirit token, numbered 3 in the Commander Anthology tokens set, was released in 2017 as part of a curated collection designed to celebrate the most popular archetypes from the Magic: The Gathering Commander format. These tokens were produced to provide players with official, high-quality physical representations of the creatures summoned by various cards found in the anthology's included decks. By consolidating staple tokens from different eras into one release, Wizards of the Coast sought to streamline gameplay and provide a consistent visual language for players engaging with complex board states.

The visual design of these tokens follows the standard aesthetic established for Magic: The Gathering creature tokens, focusing on ethereal, ghostly imagery to distinguish them from corporeal creature cards. Illustrators tasked with creating these pieces typically aim to evoke a sense of weightlessness and supernatural presence, utilizing cool color palettes and translucent forms. Because these tokens are functional tools for gameplay rather than core deck-building cards, they are valued by collectors and players primarily for their utility and the cohesive art style that ties the broader Commander experience together.
