Where it came from
The Spirit token was released in 2022 as part of the auxiliary set for Magic: The Gathering's 'The Brothers' War.' This expansion served as a nostalgic return to the lore of Urza and Mishra, two iconic artificers whose conflict defined the early history of the game's multiverse. The token was designed to represent the spectral remnants left behind by various white-aligned spells and abilities within the set, capturing the melancholic and ephemeral nature of the conflict's casualties.
The artwork was created by illustrator Caio Monteiro, who utilized a ethereal color palette to emphasize the ghostly essence of the figure. The design seeks to bridge the gap between high-fantasy aesthetics and the gritty, industrial tone of the war-torn setting. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its atmospheric quality, which provided a visual sense of stakes and loss within the complex strategic environment of the expansion.
