Thopter

The Thopter token first appeared as part of the specialized token set for the 2022 expansion The Brothers' War, a Magic: The Gathering set that revisited the foundational conflict between Urza and Mishra. These tokens were designed to represent the small, artifact-creature constructs frequently deployed by artificers in the lore of Dominaria. The art direction for this cycle aimed to evoke the retro-futuristic aesthetic of mid-century industrial fantasy, grounding the mechanical nature of the units within the specific visual language established for this historical era of the game.

Illustrated by the artist Victor Adame Minguez, the token features a streamlined, aerial design that emphasizes the utilitarian and mass-produced nature of these flying machines. Minguez focused on a clean, functional silhouette that distinguishes the Thopter from larger, more complex artifact creatures, ensuring immediate legibility on the tabletop. The design was well-received by players for its cohesion with the set's overall artifact-heavy theme and its clear representation of the token's mechanical function.
