Provenance

Where it came from

The Spirit token from the Commander 2016 set was released by Wizards of the Coast in November 2016. It serves as a visual representation for various cards in the Commander format that create creature tokens, specifically those with the Spirit subtype. The design reflects the visual language established for the set, characterized by an ethereal, ghostly aesthetic consistent with the spectral nature of the creature type in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.

The artwork was commissioned to capture a sense of intangible, supernatural presence, featuring a translucent and haunting form. These tokens were included in the preconstructed Commander decks released that year, intended to provide players with a functional and thematic accessory during gameplay. Like many token cards of the era, it was designed for clarity and ease of use, becoming a standard inclusion for decks utilizing white or blue mana spells that generate Spirit-themed mechanics.
