Provenance

Where it came from

The Saproling token from the Commander 2016 set was designed to represent a recurring creature type in Magic: The Gathering, specifically created to support archetypes centered around the 'Golgari' or 'Selesnya' color identities. Tokens like these serve as physical manifestations of game effects, such as spells or abilities that generate permanent creature bodies on the battlefield.

The visual design for this particular iteration reflects the art direction established for the Commander 2016 release, focusing on a fungal, elemental aesthetic consistent with the creature's lore. Illustrated by Nils Hamm, the token aims to evoke a sense of organic growth and forest-dwelling nature, a recurring theme for the token's depictions across various card sets.
