Spirit

The Spirit token, numbered 003 within the Tales of Middle-earth expansion for Magic: The Gathering, was released in 2023. It was created to represent the ephemeral creatures conjured by specific cards within this crossover set, which reimagined J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium through the lens of the tabletop card game. This set marked a significant milestone as the first major release under the Universes Beyond brand, aiming to synthesize the mechanics of Magic with the aesthetic and narrative depth of Middle-earth.

The design of the token reflects the set’s cohesive art direction, prioritizing a high-fantasy aesthetic that mirrors the tone of the Third Age. Illustrators working on this series were tasked with evoking a sense of spectral presence consistent with Tolkien's lore, often utilizing muted palettes and ethereal lighting to distinguish these manifestations from the game’s standard creature types. The release was met with widespread appreciation from both the gaming community and fantasy enthusiasts for its respectful integration of iconic source material.
