Spirit Cairn

Spirit Cairn was released in 2002 as part of the Judgment expansion, the third and final set in the Odyssey block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set focused on graveyard interaction and the colors green, white, and black, reflecting the shifting power dynamics of the storyline where the protagonist, Kamahl, sought to destroy the Mirari artifact. The enchantment was designed to reward players for cycling or discarding cards, mechanics that were central to the set's strategic identity during the era.

The card features artwork by Gary Ruddell, an illustrator known for his atmospheric and surrealist contributions to the game during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Ruddell utilized a muted, ethereal color palette to capture the ghostly, graveyard-centric theme of the enchantment, emphasizing the mystical nature of the cairn. Upon its release, Spirit Cairn was viewed as a niche utility card, primarily finding a place in casual play environments and limited formats where discarding cards as a cost was a prevalent mechanic.
