Spiteful Motives

Spiteful Motives is an enchantment card released in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion Shadows over Innistrad. The set explores a gothic horror aesthetic, returning to the plane of Innistrad to depict a world spiraling into madness under the influence of an eldritch corruption. This card was designed as a thematic representation of the set's focus on madness and psychological instability, functioning mechanically as an Aura that empowers a creature while pushing the player toward aggressive, high-risk combat strategies.

The artwork for the card was created by Deruchenko Alexander, who leaned into the dark, tormented visual language synonymous with the Innistrad plane. The illustration depicts a spectral figure manifesting an aura of malice, intended to evoke feelings of resentment and chaotic influence. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility piece within the set's limited environment, noted for its ability to enable combat-heavy archetypes, though it remained largely overshadowed by the set's more powerful rare and mythic entries.
