Where it came from
Spiteful Hexmage was released in 2023 as part of the Wilds of Eldraine promotional set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to function within the set's broader mechanical focus on roles and enchantment-based interactions, drawing heavily from the classic folklore themes that define the Eldraine plane. It represents the aesthetic shift toward high-fantasy storytelling that Wizards of the Coast utilized to distinguish this return to the realm from its predecessor.
The visual design of the card, featuring artwork by Anna Steinbauer, captures the grim, atmospheric style of the set’s darker fairy-tale inspirations. Steinbauer, a frequent contributor to the game, opted for a composition that emphasizes the character's magical menace, aiming to evoke a sense of inevitable curse. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficient utility in limited formats and its contribution to the set’s cohesive visual identity.
